How Can You Lower Cholesterol Naturally?
Do I have to take drugs to lower cholesterol forever??
Do drugs that lower cholesterol have harmful side effects?
The point of this website is to show you what cholesterol is, how it harms your body, and healthy, natural ways to lower your cholesterol. An individual can really get bogged down with the scientific mumbo jumbo, so I'm going to give you the nuts and bolts version of this.
WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE TOO MUCH CHOLESTEROL? In a nutshell, too much cholesterol leads to the nation's number 1 and number 3 killers: heart disease and stroke. Over half of our population still has cholesterol levels that are too high.
It is important to note that cholesterol isn't all bad. It is important to your body's function. cholesterol helps to form cell membrames, some hormones, and several other bodily functions, but too much of this waxy substance is a major factor for coronary heart disease, which leads to heart attacks.
Cholesterol can't be dissolved in the blood so it has to be transported to cells by lipoproteins. The ones that are important to this topic are low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
If you have too much LDL circulating in the blood, it along with other substances can form plaque on the artery walls. The more plaque that builds up, the increase chances of that artery being clogged causing a heart attack or a stroke depending on where the clot is located. High levels of LDL are 160mg/dL or higher and if you have heart disease, doctors like to have you keep it less than 100 mg/dL. It is commonly refered to as the "bad" cholesterol.
HDL is considered to be the "good" cholesterol. Experts seem to think that a high level reduces the chances for a heart attack. It is thought that the HDL can remove cholesterol from the plaques and slow their growth. A level lower than 40mg/dL in men and 50mg/dL in women suggests a greater risk for a heart attack.
LET'S GET PHYSICAL!!
Exercise is my specialty so I can really help you out with this. Exercise helps to increase the HDL in your body. So if those levels are higher than you can lower the risk of heart disease.
If you are overweight, then your chances of getting heart disease increase, so exercise is key to losing weight. Weight loss not only helps lower cholesterol, but it also helps reduce the chances of acquiring diabetes, lowers blood pressure, gets your heart and lungs strong, and prevents other potential health risks.
OTHER WAYS TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL
Stop smoking. Geez, there are like a million reasons not to smoke, but smoking actually lowers your HDL count. That is bad! It also increases the tendency for blood to clot which as we discussed can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

How do you lower cholesterol? That is presented to many people every year and the answer that is given to them usually is prescription drugs. But is that the best answer to lower cholesterol? Are there better and safer ways to lower cholesterol? Or should you be doing something right now to prevent you from even acquiring high cholesterol?
WHO AM I AND WHY DO I CARE ABOUT THIS TOPIC?
My name is Adam Kessler and operate a personal training company in Columbus, Ohio called Fitness Planning Consultants, Inc. As stated earlier, if your cholesterol goes unchecked, then it could lead to heart disease which is the number one killer amoung Americans.
In the past year, my father had some chest pains due to heart disease and my mother-in-law had a valve transplant. I have clients who have high cholesterol, had heart attacks, and needed a lifestyle change to turn things around. This can be done and I've seen it done, but you have to want to do it.
BUT I LOOK AND FEEL FINE
You look and feel healthy so why should you change your lifestyle to address these issues. I will tell you why and this phrase sums it up well. This was told to me by a doctor who was treating a heart attack victim. This is what his patient said:
"But I thought I was healthy up until I had my heart attack."
The reason why you start doing those changes now is because you need to be proactive instead of reactive. Making these changes when something is wrong will be TOO LATE!!

SO HOW DOES ONE GET HIGH CHOLESTEROL?
It is very simple..your diet. Your body can produce around 1000mg a day of cholesterol. The average American man consumes around 337 mg of cholesterol while the average woman consumes 217 mg. The American Heart Associaton recommends that your average daily intake of cholesterol be less than 300 mg, 200mg if you have heart disease.
Essentially, this means this. Foods from animals (egg yolks, meat, poultry, fish, whole-milk products) contain cholesterol. Foods from plants (fruits, veggies, grains, nuts, and seeds) don't. Specifically, saturated fats and those nasty trans fats can raise cholesterol levels, so you want to avoid those as well.
One of the main ingredients you want to look for to help lower cholesterol is fiber. It is said that if you increase your fiber intake, it helps to decrease the absorption of cholesterol in your intestines. It also helps to reduce LDL's. As you can recall, high levels of LDL is bad.
In a nutshell, eat lean forms of meat and avoid frying it in a lovely oil. Eat more fruits and veggies and you can help lower that cholesterol level.
